  • Waste management service Ubirator has provided schools in Moscow and Saint Petersburg with electronic containers for recycling management.

The Ubox smart containers have been designed to educate schools on the importance of separate waste collection. With the help of the containers, schoolchildren are not only actively participating in the collection of recyclable materials, but they also have the opportunity to compete with other schools. The total volume of recyclables deposited into the box is calculated, with the weight then transferred into points. The containers also provide users with statistics about the raw materials collected.

  • Vehicle production company GAZ delivered 3.5 million roubles worth of gifts with their ‘Giftmobile’.

In partnership with the 800 Good Deeds project, GAZ and their umbrella company, the Modern Transport Technologies Group, delivered gifts to more than 2,500 children and the elderly from 88 charitable foundations and orphanages. The initiative successfully united those seeking to offer their help with those who are in need. On New Year’s Eve, 68 vehicles took to the streets across 52 regions of the country, collecting gifts from both large companies and caring citizens.

Among the donated gifts were personal hygiene items for children and adults, toys, household appliances, and much more. A list of suggested items to donate was published on the 800 Good Deeds website.

  • Discounted courses on the online educational platform Skillbox have saved CSOs 9 million roubles

Skillbox released an interim report documenting the results of their Limitless Opportunities Project, which allows CSOs to access courses with a discount of up to 90% for both employees and beneficiaries. Within four months, the value of money saved amounted to 9 million roubles, meaning CSOs and social entrepreneurs have managed to cut 80% of their budget.

Following this success, Skillbox is now simplifying the verification system for CSOs. As a result, any civil society organisation that conducts annual reporting – be it an established organisation, a recent start-up or specialist project – can receive a discount of up to 90% on any of the platform’s courses. You can apply for the discount here.

  • Nestlé have announced that all their Russian factories have switched to renewable energy sources

Nestlé has factories across six regions in Russia: Kaluga, Vologda, Vladimir, Samara, Krasnodar, and the Perm territories. The company is also looking to open a factory in the Novosibirsk region.

According to initial calculations, Nestlé’s switch to renewable energy sources will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 80 000 tonnes per year. The company has transitioned to using electric energy generated by windfarms in all their Russian facilities.

  • Russia’s IKEA stores are stocking soft toys based on children’s drawings, with profits from the sales donated to charity

Among the five toys being sold in the collection is a mermaid dog, which is based on a drawing by Savva, a young designer from Saint Petersburg. Alongside the mermaid dog, you will find a bird, a fried egg, a cat, and a set of sandwich-friends in the collection.

Every year children from all over the world draw sketches of their dream toy as part of IKEA’s ‘Let’s Play’ competition. Five designs are then selected to be made into real toys. This year, more than 66 thousand drawings were sent in.

Funds from the sale of these unique toys are donated to support local projects around Russia that support children’s right to play and encourage youth development.

  • Samsung has equipped all new smartphones with an app containing information about the Sustainable Development Goals.

The app contains information pertaining to each of the UN’s seventeen global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), alongside material on environmental theories, motivational screensavers, and a donation portal. Users are able to help solve current global crises via the app by choosing to donate to organisations that work within the framework of any of the SDGs. Money can also be donated by collecting funds from paid ads. Samsung have promised to double the amount of all donations.
