Civil society campaign launched aimed at fighting alcoholism in Russia

A Life Without Alcohol campaign was launched on 18 November and will be publicised on television, radio, outdoor advertising and the internet. The promotional video highlights situations in which a person under the influence of alcohol commits a wanton act.
“The main aim of our campaign is to show with specific examples how too much drink makes a person look weak. There are many situations in life where memories can be scarred due to excessive alcohol consumption: an important date, a birthday, wedding or business event, communication with loved-ones and time spent with their children. We hope our initiative will help people think about what is really important to them and that it is better for their health to abstain from alcohol”, said Sofia Malyavina, Director General of the National Priorities CSO.
According to All-Russian Public Opinion Research Centre figures quoted by National Priorities, the number of Russians who don’t drink alcohol has increased 1.8 times over the past 20 years (from 27% to 48%). Experts say this is largely down to general public awareness and the implementation of anti-alcohol measures.
Free medical help for alcohol addiction can be obtained throughout the campaign. Support is available by contacting the State narcological dispensary. People can also call a hotline number (8 (800) 200-0-200)), or health centres across Russia to check the extent to which their health can be impacted by alcohol abuse and receive advice on leading a healthy lifestyle.
