Bishkek hosted the VI International Nursing Forum, which was held to coincide with World Nurses’ and Midwives’ Day, and brought together nurses from all Kyrgyz regions.
Gulsunkan Zhunushalieva, a deputy in the Jogorku Kenesh (Kyrgyzstan’s Supreme Council) and Elnura Boronbueva, an advisor to the Kyrgyz Health Minster, emphasised the vital role played by nurses in disease prevention and in improving people’s quality of life. Several professionals were recognised for their contribution to the development of health care.
The Forum’s theme: “Nursing Science: Research, Development and Innovation” focused on the advancement of scientific research, the professional development of nurses and midwives and international cooperation in the field of nursing. Nurses and midwives comprise more than half of all medical staff in Kyrgyzstan and provide around 90% of the population’s interaction with the health care system.
Kyrgyzstan’s Health Ministry is expanding the role of nurses by delegating to them some of the functions of doctors in disease prevention, as well as maternal, child and palliative health care.
