A presentation of this new palliative care for children manual has taken place in Moscow. A translation of a well-known Oxford textbook can form the framework for a standard palliative care course in medical universities say experts. The manual has been issued by the Orthodox Help Service Agency Miloserdie and the Praktika publishing house.

The Ministry of Health fully supports the introduction of this manual and we hope it makes a significant contribution to the training of medical personnel, said Valery Buzin, Deputy Director of the Ministry’s Public Health and Communications Department, speaking at a press conference organised by the media agency Russia Today on 10 October to publicise the manual.

This guidance can become an important educational tool for Russian doctors, said Anna Sonkina-Dorman, a paediatrician who arranged for the guidance to be translated into Russian, in a press release issued by Miloserdie which will be distributing the first thousand copies. Doctors as well as members of educational institutions and charity organisations that specialise in helping terminally ill children will be able to apply for a free copy.

At the same time, Diana Nevzorova, the principal independent palliative care specialist with the Ministry of Health, said that the National Medical Chamber was currently discussing and making changes to professional standards for doctors working in various specialist areas who also deal with terminally ill children during the course of their work.

The Oxford manual is the most well-known and widely regarded textbook on relieving child pain and has been written by 72 specialists from 12 countries.
