First regional Community Forum opens this year in Novosibirsk

Discussion to focus on drivers of country’s new social and economic policy.

On 14 April, the traditional Community Forum of the consultative Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation began its work at the international exhibition complex Novosibirsk Expocentre.

The forum will explore topics under the title, Stability and protection: drivers of new social and economic policy. The thematic work streams of the programme are:

  • social support
  • economic development
  • Year of Cultural Heritage
  • family policies
  • support for young professionals
  • infrastructure for life
  • public accountability
  • educational pathways
  • local places
  • ‘patriotic education’.

Members of the federal and regional civic chambers, NGO directors and representatives, executive authorities, and invited experts will speak at the forum.

This year, over 2,100 people from 75 constituent entities of the Russian Federation have registered for the Community Forum. According to the Secretary of the Civic Chamber Lidia Mikheeva, that is a record high since the Forum was established.

In the morning, the forum will host an exhibition called Successful social projects of the Siberian Federal District.

Events focused on the work of non-profits will include:

  • A round table discussion entitled Development of the non-profit sector and non-state social service providers under the sanctions regime. Items scheduled for discussion include the challenges that non-profits currently face in areas of the Siberian Federal District, and the sort of support that non-state social service providers
  • A project-based session, Regional rating for non-profits: third-sector strengths and weaknesses in the constituent entities of the Russian Federation. The session is designed to develop ways of strengthening the region’s non-profit sector.
  • A joint discussion between ASI and the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation entitled, How to save the world: why CSOs and the media should work together, and how to achieve that here and now.

The Community Forum is an open platform for dialogue between officials, business leaders, citizen‑activists, CSOs and anyone else with an interest. Its main tasks are to identify the best regional and federal citizen engagement practices and bring together likeminded people. Based on proposals developed at the forum, experts will draft a Civic Chamber report about the state of civil society in Russia. The report will be subsequently submitted to the Head of State.
