05.12.2018
The panel for the Leaders of Corporate Charity 2018 has decided which companies have spent the most on charity projects.
Among those companies with the best charity practices, Siberian Coal Energy Company and Sistema came top. Sakhalin Energy and Rostelecom came second and third respectively. Rusal, Metalloinvest, Gazprom Neft, Exxon Neftegas, Sibur, IBM and United Metallurgical Company made the top ten.
Best practices were determined by taking into account the company’s approach to charity, task management and an evaluation of the activity’s effect.
Besides the ranking, there were 10 awards in the competition. Among them were disclosure of charitable activities, best grants competition, best programme to develop infrastructure within the company’s local NGO, charity and volunteering sector, best programme to develop social enterprise in Russia, etc.
The Siberian Coal Energy Company won the award for disclosure of charitable activities, followed by Rusal and United Metallurgical Company in second and third place.
The award for best grants competition was won by Gazprom Neft for its competition entitled Hometowns.
The awards were established for the first time by Russia’s Presidential Grants Foundation. Presenting the awards, the director of the fund Ilya Chukalin noted that it was important for companies to hold grants competitions and develop their technology in that field.
“It’s very important for our country. For regional authorities, these practices are often standards which demonstrate how work should be done,” he said.
As the organisers of the competition noted, fewer companies are willing to spend money on charities with every year. For example, 60 companies participated in 2016, compared with 52 in 2017 and 46 in 2018, according to Vedomosti. At the same time, budgets for philanthropy were growing: 45 companies gave 43.9 billion roubles (GBP 523 million) in 2017 whereas in 2018, 41 companies spent 50.6 billion roubles (GBP 600 million).
