NGOs that receive money from the USA could be in danger of being closed down
15.07.2020
A new Bill is being introduced that amends the federal law on “Measures to take action against individuals involved in breaches of fundamental human rights and freedoms and those of Russian citizens”.
The Bill’s author is Andrey Lugovoy, a Liberal Democratic Party MP and member of the State Duma’s Security and Anti-Corruption Committee. It would allow the Ministry of Justice to suspend the work of NGOs who are engaged in political activities in Russia while at the same time receiving money or other assets from American citizens or organisations. The Bill would also apply to funds received on a reimbursable basis.
The Ministry would also have the power to suspend the activities of any NGO that carries out a project or programme which is deemed to be “to the detriment of Russia”. Decisions on any such cases will be taken on the basis of information provided by federal executive agencies and the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
