According to Infotag, the blackouts began on 3 January as a result of significant network demand which left people without gas and electricity.

The blackouts initially lasted for an hour, increasing to four hours by 6 January and generally occurring at peak times. Tiraspolenergo has drawn up a rolling programme of blackouts but this is not being met due to constant network failures – there are more than 100 incidents on the Transnistrian energy grid every day.

Initial local authority estimates indicated that Donetsk coal reserves used by Transnistria’s two power plants would last for 50 days. However, experts said that such claims were overly optimistic and did not take into account the fact that gas supplies had been cut off, as well as the sharp rise in electricity consumption. Under present conditions, there will only be enough coal for 30 days, with the ongoing war in Ukraine making coal imports impossible.

The Transnistrian authorities have developed measures to minimise adverse impacts in order to support the public and the work of the region’s infrastructure and say that existing gas reserves should be sufficient for 20 days.

Reduced pressure on the network caused by the blackouts has affected water supplies, with the upper floors of multi-storey buildings in Bender and Tiraspol, as well as other consumers, left without water.

A statement released by the Moldovan Government’s press office said: “The villages of Kopanka and Varnitsa, which are under the control of the constituent authorities, have also been impacted by the blackouts. They are liaising with the majors of these settlements and exchanging information on the current situation. The police, medical and emergency services are all on hand to provide help to those who need it”.
