People with disabilities are still facing serious issues despite State efforts to make life easier for them, said Armenia’s Human Rights Commissioner, Anahit Manasyan, at an international conference on Access to Services for People with Disabilities.
Manasyan argued the need to try and find prompt and professional solutions to these problems and that inclusiveness was a key element in protecting the rights of disabled people.
The Commissioner also touched on issues of disabled people’s access to education, noting the importance of providing material in braille, as well as sign language interpretation in educational institutions. She also raised concerns about their access to banking and digital services, including websites, as well as healthcare support.
“The environment is generally inaccessible to people with disabilities which is why it is necessary to highlight problem areas and explore effective solutions to them”, said Manasyan.
The international conference was organised by the My Step charity in partnership with the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. Its aim was to bring together organisations that provide services to people with disabilities and review other countries’ experiences and tools whose examples Armenia could adopt.
