At a plenary session held on 25 August, the State Duma passed the first reading of a bill that prohibits residents of countries that allow gender transitioning from adopting Russian children.
The bill was drafted by a group of Duma deputies, together with the Chamber’s Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin, with amendments currently being proposed to Articles 127 and 146 of the Federation’s Family Code.
The bill would ban citizens of States that authorise “the change of sex by medical intervention, including with the use of medicine”, or allow individuals to change their gender on official identity documents. The ban will apply to “dozens of countries”.
“This decision is aimed at protecting childhood and traditional family values and is supported by the vast majority of Duma deputies”, said Volodin.
