At a meeting of the Coordination Council for the Decade of Childhood held on 12 July, Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko announced that work would begin on setting up a short hotline number to help children and their families.
“The Deputy Prime Minister supports the introduction of a hotline to provide urgent and confidential psychological help for children and their parents and has asked the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media to create a short number 124 to provide this service”, said a statement posted on the Government’s website.
Since 2010, Russia has had a single national helpline number (8 (800) 200-01-22) for children, teenagers and their parents which receives around one million calls a year. Support is provided free of charge and anonymously.
The idea for an open access to the helpline through a short number was first announced three years ago.
