Russia: MED report on CSOs and charities in 2023

Russian companies donated nearly 91 billion roubles to CSOs during 2023, according to a report from Russia’s Ministry of Economic Development

According to the Ministry, there has been an increase in the number of SONGOs in Russia. There were more than 130,000 such bodies in the country last year, employing more than 371,000 people.

 

The report also highlighted an annual growth in the number of volunteers, with nearly four million people supporting the work of CSOs in 2023.

 

“The contribution of the non-profit sector to the country’s GDP has doubled over the last five years. There has been a rise in the number of SONGOs, full-time employees and volunteers since 2022. Support from businesses has also increased given charity is now one of the main elements of a company’s sustainable development strategy. The amount of donations to SONGOs has gone up 3.5 times since 2021”, said the Ministry’s Deputy Minister, Tatyana Ilyushnikova.

 

Ministry figures show that businesses donated 90.8 billion roubles to charity in 2023 which is twice as much as in 2022 (41.1 billion).

 

The report also includes data on Government support to CSOs. In 2023, over 11,000 CSOs received more than 87 billion roubles from State authorities.
