Tightening up on charity fraudsters in Russia

Russia adopts a new rapid response to deal with fraudsters posing as charity workers

09.08.2018

A campaign known as Tackling Fraudsters Together has been set up with an interactive website allowing members of the public to post information about fraudsters.  The head of the campaign explained that people will be able to help in the fight against fraud by using the website to upload photographs of people they see collecting money on the streets or on public transport who they suspect are not genuine fundraisers.

The second conference of Tackling Fraudsters Together was held in the Blagosphere Centre in May.  Experts debated the problems of accountability and transparency for charities, specifically in the way they are perceived by their donors. They shared concerns that the public are not always able to distinguish between genuine appeals for donations online and the fake posts of fraudsters.

The project Tackling Fraudsters Together brings together over 200 Russian charities seeking to operate in an honest and professional manner.

The declaration of honesty by which charities are bound specifies where collection boxes can be used.  They should only be used during properly organised fundraising events, they should be fixed to a surface, clearly labelled and only opened in the presence of independent witnesses.
