Winners of the international social enterprise competition Social Impact Award announced

02.10.2019

Every winner receives 130,000 roubles and an invitation to the international SIA summit taking place in Kyiv 3-7 December.

The competition jury picked out three projects:

  • CCOVER from Yaroslavl, a project that produces attractive covers for prostheses.
  • The St Petersburg ecological catering company Food Will Save The World, which helps shops to avoid waste by getting their excess food products to chefs who can use them to prepare food for their customers.
  • See With Your Heart, a gallery-in-the-dark in Ekaterinburg at which blind people are trained and employed as guides.

A fourth winner, a mental health centre for the elderly in Nizhny Novgorod, was chosen by public vote.

The winner of Rostelecom’s special Internet for a Better World nomination was the Geek Teachers project from Moscow. The enterprise trains teachers in new technologies through social networks, vibrant festivals, educational events and online courses.

‘The value of our programme is that we help budding social entrepreneurs to become part of an ecosystem where they receive support and resources to help their projects grow and become financially sustainable,” says Ekaterina Khaletskaya, co-founder and director of Impact Hub Moscow. ‘Due to the practical orientation of the incubator (emphasis on testing products and services among the target audience and working with curators and experienced entrepreneurs), as well as the opportunity to learn from each other, SIA participants go from an idea to a well-developed business model in just a few months. To achieve such results alone in such a short time is very difficult’.

The Social Impact award is organised by Impact Hub Moscow in conjunction with Citi and Youth Business of Russia. They received 123 applications and 44 finalists were chosen from 13 cities across Russia. All of them participated in the incubation programme: they launched their products and services as pilot schemes and collected feedback from the target audience. Face-to-face meetings of the participants were held in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg and the projects were presented to the jury in St. Petersburg and Moscow 25-27 September.
