Changing attitudes to drug addiction in Russia
One in four Russians supports the isolation of people with a drug addiction

1,600 Russians took part in a poll conducted by the All-Russian Centre for Public Opinion Research in June this year.
In the survey, 41% said that people with a drug addiction need medical help. In 2014, most respondents considered drug abuse to be a social problem that society itself should “treat”. However, today, such a view is less popular and was shared by 28% of those surveyed, according to the Centre’s website.
Just under a quarter of respondents (23%) think that drug users are “dangerous” and are in favour of isolating them. In 2019, 28% of those asked supported such an approach, with 4% unsure either way.
Over the last five years, Russians have become less vocal about the rise in the number of drug addicts. This was true for 47% of respondents in 2018, 45% in 2019 and 30% in 2021.
