Competition for doctors interested in palliative neurology
04.03.2019
The Live Now charity is holding a competition for doctors interested in working in the field of palliative neurology.
The contest is designed to draw doctors’ attention to the problems of people suffering from neurological illnesses such as motor neuron disease.
In order to take part in the contest and receive a copy of a book “The art of communication in dealing with patients”, you’ll need to complete an application form by clicking on this ссылке link, as well as submitting a short essay on “Why I am interested in providing palliative care for patients with motor neuron disease”. The deadline for applications is 17 March.
“When people with motor neuron disease come to us from across Russia for help, it’s clear
there are not enough doctors in our country with the essential knowledge and expertise in this area”, said Natalya Lugovaya, Director-General of Live Now. “We are ready to share this knowledge”, she said.
The importance of being able to communicate effectively with patients and their families is uppermost in the minds of doctors who work with seriously ill people. The book “The art of communication in dealing with patients” will help practitioners understand how to build strong relationships with sick people. It has been translated into Russian and was issued last year in our country by the Granat publishing house.
“The art of communication, i.e. professionalism in interacting with patients, comes top of a list of skills which also includes expertise in basic scientific knowledge, clinical practice and practical skills”, writes Anna Sonikina, a palliative care physician, founder of the School of professional medical communication skills and expert working with Live Now in the book’s introduction.
The medical education system in Russia does not provide training in these important skills. There is no modern and specialist literature base which is compounded by a lack of specially trained teachers in this area of expertise.
