The PR Consultancy CROS has published an annual study that identifies and ranks anxiety levels among Russians, based on media and social media analysis.
According to their research, the anxiety index for Russia in 2024 fell by a quarter compared to the previous year, from 11,754.02 to 8,957.41. Experts attribute this to the fact that media coverage during the year has generally been more “calm”.
The number of “calm” Russian regions has also increased from 27 to 39. The researchers say that this reflects a more balanced view of worrying news in a growing number of regions.
Moscow remains the region that has the greatest stress levels, although its index rating fell from 642.05 to 531.94. The top three issues that concerned citizens the most were: a slump in the value of the rouble, migrants and reduced availability of YouTube. Not surprisingly, Kursk and Belgorod were in the top three high anxiety areas, mainly due to shelling to which the regions have been subjected during the current military conflict.
The most stressed regions also include:
- St Petersburg;
- Sverdlovsk oblast;
- Novosibirsk oblast;
- Rostov oblast;
- Bryansk oblast;
- Krasnodar krai;
- Moscow region.
The main issue that emerged during the year was financial and telephone fraud, which immediately appeared among the top three sources of anxiety in 48 regions, and top of the list in 18 regions.
“The fall in the stress index for the second year running is proof that Russians are finally adapting to life against the backdrop of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Domestic issues have come to the fore this year and it is not so much the rise in prices which is interesting but the problem of fraud which is now top of the anxiety list in more than half of Russian regions and which is a significant social factor”, said Kirill Lubnin, Vice President of CROS.
The most “calm” regions remain:
- The Republic of Ingushetia;
- The Kabardino-Balkar Republic;
- The Karachay-Cherkessia Republic;
- The Altai Republic;
- Amur oblast;
- Magadan oblast;
- The Republic of Tyva;
- The Republic of Adygea;
- The Republic of Kalmykia;
- The Jewish Autonomous Oblast.
