A project to introduce a system of mentoring that provides individual help and support to orphans and children left without parental care has been successfully rolled out in Kazakhstan.

According to the Ministry of Education, more than 300 Kazakhs in 17 cities across the country have already become mentors.

“Mentoring is an important means for ensuring the wellbeing of orphans and children left without parental care. It is designed to help a child’s adaptation into society and prepare them for an independent adult life. Guardianship and custody agencies are in charge of the selection process, with each candidate undergoing an interview and a thorough assessment of their living arrangements. Only once all stages have been satisfactorily completed and the necessary references received can the applicant become a mentor”, said the Ministry.

The Ministry also lists the main requirements for becoming a mentor such as having Kazakhstan citizenship, age of majority, no criminal record and permanent residence in the country. The mentor can support a child in a number of areas, including additional education and access to healthcare.
