The number of criminal cases initiated in Georgia for sexual offences rose by 66% during the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period last year, reported the Georgian Ministry of Interior on its website.
According to the Ministry, 146 such crimes were recorded in the country during the first three months of 2024 compared to 88 in the same period last year.
Meanwhile, the number of rape cases during the first quarter of 2024 rose by 77.8% to 48 cases compared to the same period last year. The detection rate has increased from 48% to 62% in five years.
Ninety people were charged with sexual offences in the first three months of 2024, with 28 individuals prosecuted by law enforcement officials for rape alone.
Thirty people, ten of whom were minors, were found to be victims of rape between 1 January and 31 March this year.
