Steep rise in donations through online platforms in Russia

Over the past four years donations to NGOs have risen 15 times

The CAF Foundation has calculated how much money is raised in Russia through online platforms.

Online charitable platforms have been operating in Russia for over 10 years.  There are currently 13 services which enable people to quickly and safely donate money to NGOs or other charitable causes.

The organisations using these platforms usually confirm that the money they receive comes from a legitimate and ‘clean’ source and disclose the sums that they receive in this way.  Transfers using these platforms are safe and transparent, both for the donor and for the NGO.

The authors of the research explain that the emergence of crowd-funding services have led to a significant increase in the amount of money raised.   Over the past 5 years (between 2013 and 2017) these platforms have seen a 10-fold increase in their donations.  In 2013 the total amount raised was 23.4 million roubles, and this figure has risen every year since – 71.2 million in 2014, 138 million in 2015 and 246.5 million in 2016.  According to the magazine The Philanthropist, in 2017 the figure rose to around 350 million roubles.  Since 2013 altogether 800 million roubles have been raised for NGOs using these platforms.

The size of a typical donation varies from one platform to another, ranging from 350 to 1,000 roubles.  The highest average donation of 1,000 roubles was recorded by Blago.ru.  Monthly online donations have also become more popular, increasing 14 times over the past three years.

However, despite this positive development, the number of NGOs raising money through these platforms is still fairly small.  Each platform has between 50 and 140 organisations registered on them.

The authors of the study carried out by the CAF Foundation state that platforms strive to promote the work of NGOs by making their information resources available to them.  They appeal to a new audience and use their social networks and other marketing methods to build a close collaboration with NGOs.
