UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Russia appointed

The UN Human Rights Council has appointed a Special Rapporteur on human rights in Russia.

The UN Special Rapporteur will hold their position for one year and will be determined at subsequent Council sessions.

The Russian Agency of International Information, RIA Novosti, reports that a UN Special Rapporteur for Russia has been appointed for the first time.

They will collect information on human rights violations, analyse them, and present them in a report.

The UN countries call on Russia to cooperate with the rapporteur during their term in office.

Head of the Agora Human Rights group, Pavel Chikov, explained that it is unclear whether Russia will collaborate with the rapporteur. “Since today the permanent representative of the Russian Federation in the UN bodies in Geneva has once again spoken out against the project,” Chikov said.
