The Support Fund for Children in Difficult Life Situations presented a report on the work of the All-Russian Children’s Helpline over the past year. Data was collected from all regions of Russia. Counselors working on the helpline received almost 900 000 calls from children, adolescents, their parents, relatives and teachers over the year. The highest numbers of calls for help came from the Siberian Federal District, from where there were more than 205 000 calls. In the Volga Federal District, there were 170 000 calls, and in the Central District, 151 000. The five regions with the largest number of calls received included the Kemerovo region (more than 70 000), Chelyabinsk region (55 000), as well as the Moscow, Orenburg and St. Petersburg regions (40 000 calls each). According to analysts, these figures do not reflect the problems in any particular region, but are about more about the awareness of the psychological support that the All-Russian Children’s Helpline can provide.
So why are we worried?
More than half of the calls – 462 000 – came from children and adolescents. Mostly they are having problems with their relationships with peers and parents, and worries about studying, exams and university entrance. Often during conversations with psychologists, children and adolescents mentioned abuse at home, in schools, on the street, and harassment online. More than 8,500 people called with the intention of committing suicide.
The report noted that there is a noticeable tendency among teenagers not just to complain, but to call with the hope of help in resolving the conflict.
Parents and other adults are concerned about problems with a child, such as his upbringing, self-determination and future.
