At the end of last year, Belarus was ranked eighth in the world in the diagnosis of mental illness, with one in four residents suffering from an anxiety/depressive or adaptation disorder, said Svetlana Dolzhenko, a specialist in the psychological department at the State’s Republican Scientific and Practical Mental Health Institution, at a press conference in Minsk on 24 March, wrote the independent Belarusian news agency, Pozirk.

Around 510,000 cases of depression were recorded in Belarus last year, which is around 5.6% of the population, said Dolzhenko. According to her, many Belarusians do not seek specialist help in time, or are in a prolonged and distressed state that can lead to a variety of different outcomes.

Dolzhenko said that the number of requests for psychological support had increased but didn’t provide any detailed figures. Teenagers and the elderly are the most vulnerable groups, with those over 30 seeking help most often.
