Individuals who took part in the Chernobyl disaster relief operation and are suffering from various forms of disability as a consequence will receive increased monthly State allowances from 1 August this year. An amendment to draft legislation to give effect to this measure was approved on 27 June by the Moldovan Parliament during the bill’s first reading, reports the Moldpres news agency.

Under the amendment, allowances will go up by 250 lei for people with severe, pronounced or moderate disabilities whose conditions are directly related to their work in the area affected by the nuclear fall-out from 1986. The beneficiaries are ex-servicemen, intelligence and security officers, members of the Interior Ministry’s military as well as individuals seconded from Government departments, businesses and other organisations.

The list of those receiving extended support also includes people diagnosed with actinic illnesses or who have become disabled as a result of radiation exposure during their involvement in the relief work. Surviving spouses and one of the parents of victims who have passed away will also benefit from the increased allowances.

Another targeted group are those people who in 1986 came to Moldova from the area hit by the disaster and subsequently obtained State citizenship.

The legislation was introduced by the MP Iulia Dascalu, a member of Moldova’s Action and Solidarity Party.

The Government has committed four million lei from the State budget to implement these measures, with the bill now due its second reading.
