The civil society organisation League of the Nation’s Health has discovered that in 80% of cases, Russians die as a result of chronic infectious and non-infectious diseases.

Izvestia has studied the research carried out by the League which showed that in 76% of cases, Russian citizens leave it too late before going to see their doctor. According to the League, the main causes of chronic diseases are:

  • High cholesterol;
  • Consuming too much salt;
  • Lack of fruit and vegetables in people’s diets;
  • Smoking;
  • Physical inactivity;
  • Obesity;
  • High blood pressure

The League’s President Leo Bokeriya stated that cardiovascular disease continues to be the main cause of global deaths, with physical inactivity fourth on the list.

Polina Kontsedaylo, a cardiologist at Invitro, explained that a person’s individual characteristics such as age, gender or hereditary conditions as well as external factors can contribute to cardiovascular issues. However, the overall risk of developing heart problems can be reduced by leading a healthy lifestyle. This view is supported by Ekaterina Ivanova, Chief Medical Prevention Specialist at the Central Federal District’s Ministry of Health, who said that a 39% reduction in the mortality rate could be achieved as a result.
