Calls have increased by more than 25% since the beginning of the year, reaching its highest level since the Covid pandemic. Experts warn that the project is at the limit of its resources.

The All-Russian helpline for female domestic violence victims has recorded a sharp rise in the number of calls this year. It received 1,837 in January, with the figure increasing to 2,313 in October.

The volume of calls has gone up by 25%, with the trend particularly noticeable during the summer. Unlike previous years when there was a lull during the warm weather, in 2025 demand has increased every month, with October seeing record numbers.

“This is the first time we have seen such a rise in the amount of calls, with more and more women deciding to speak out about their abuse and looking for ways to escape their ordeal. It’s a big wake-up call and one that places a huge responsibility on us”, said project coordinator Larisa Ponarina.

Larisa also stated that the helpline was receiving more calls from smaller towns and from women seeking help for the first time. They are looking for emotional and information support, advice on how to keep safe and protect their children, as well as finding shelter.

However, the record volume of calls are putting an enormous strain on resources, with the helpline lacking the funds to take on more staff and increase the number of shifts. As a result, some women may not receive help at a time when they desperately need it.

In order to continue its work and provide support to those in need, the organisation is reaching out to partners, businesses and private donors for help. Even small but regular donations can help staff deal with the large number of calls.

The helpline (8 (800) 700 06 00)) is Russia’s oldest free, confidential and round-the-clock support service for female domestic violence victims, and operates under the auspices of the Resource Assistance Centre.
