Moldova is to create a National Committee for the Protection of Pensioners and People with Disabilities, which intends to make its presence felt prior to the upcoming Presidential election.

This was announced on Thursday at a press conference held at Infotag by Dumitru Pulbere, former President of Moldova’s Constitutional Court, who chaired the group behind this initiative.

“The elderly are the largest population group whom the authorities generally use to their advantage. Moldova’s 660,000 pensioners are extremely responsible citizens who pay their utility bills straight away without thinking how they will find the money to buy bread. It’s the same when it comes to elections. Politicians will promise much but almost immediately forget about the needs of the elderly once in power”, Pulbere complained.

Pulbere said that he would be holding meetings with pensioners in all regions to discuss issues of most concern to them.

“A National Pensioners’ Assembly will be convened in due course which will be attended by local delegations. They will set up a civil society organisation which could be called the National Committee for the Protection of Pensioners and the Most Vulnerable in Society”, said Pulbere.

Pulbere added that members of the group behind this initiative have already made two demands to the current Government, namely for fair pension indexation and the establishment of a working group to work on a new formula for calculating pension amounts.

“Calculations of last year’s pension indexation did not take the horrendous 30% plus inflation rate of 2022 into account. Everyone received an indexation of 14%. However, there is a law on pension indexation which is based on inflation rates. Then, the authorities said they didn’t have the money which resulted in pensioners receiving half the amount they had expected. This is an unfair situation that needs to be rectified”, said Pulbere.
