The Russian State Duma tightens the requirements for migrant workers

The Duma has passed a law requiring migrants to provide for their family in Russia.

“Migrant workers will be required to support themselves and their loved-ones who live in Russia and are dependent on them, at a level no lower than the subsistence minimum, multiplied by the regional coefficient”, said the Duma in a statement following adoption of the draft legislation by MPs.

The lower house stated that should these conditions not be met, migrants’ work permits or work authorisations will not be renewed and would have to leave the country within 15 days, together with their young children.

The Duma also passed a resolution requiring migrants to make a fixed advance personal income tax payment.

“Those who come here to work must pay for their children and families, according to set standards”, explained the Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin in outlining the rationale behind the new measures.

In addition, under the new law passed by the Duma, migrant children who have reached 18 years of age will be required a work permit or leave the country.
