    • Political and economic turmoil in the Soviet Union leads to collapse of its health and welfare system. • BEARR, standing for ‘British Emergency Action in Russia and the Republics’, is set up informally by a group of British women in Moscow. • In December, the Soviet Union collapses.
  • 1992

    • April – BEARR is formally constituted as a charity and a launch party is held in Durbar court at the FCDO. Trustee Megan Bick carries out the first of BEARR’s emergency aid trips.

    • Later this year, BEARR begins to turn its attention away from emergency aid, towards supporting burgeoning civil society organisations and facilitating the exchange of expertise between the West and the former Soviet Union. BEARR’s first annual conference takes place in London.

    • In the autumn, Megan sets up BEARR’s first office in Moscow.
  • 1994

    • BEARR hosts a fundraising chess tournament at the British Embassy, Moscow, where world chess champion Garry Kasparov and Nigel Short play against 30 participants from the public.
