NGOs propose that the CIS Parliamentary Assembly create a council on ageing
The Russian inter-regional coalition of organisations dealing with the rights of the aged and the Central Asia without Borders network, Agenet, have made a joint submission to the Assembly’s standing committee on social policy and human rights. The letter, which was published in the coalition’s journal, states that the NGOs help elderly people in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Moldova, Russia, Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. It goes on to say that they have accumulated significant experience and potential in the field of providing social assistance to the elderly, and express their readiness to work with the various member states of the CIS towards improving the quality of life of the elderly. The proposed assembly would provide a forum where interested organisations and countries could present their models and programmes for developing social aid for the aged.
