Russia releases First Official Guide on Geriatrics

27.04.2018

The first complete Russian Guide on Geriatrics entitled Care of the Frail and Elderly has been presented at the 5th All-Russian Congress of Gerontologists and Geriatricians.

Over 40 leading experts in geriatrics contributed to the Guide, including the Chief Independent Expert in Geriatrics at the Russian Ministry of Health, Professor Olga Tkacheva, who heads up the Family Medicine Department at the Mechnikov North-West State Medical University, and Professor Yelena Frolova, member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Professor Nikolai Yakhno, Head of the Neurological Diseases Department at Sechenov University.

The authors have taken a modern, evidence-based approach to the diagnosis and treatment of disease.   The guide outlines the most common geriatric conditions and the most widespread diseases affecting the elderly.  The publication is aimed at GPs, therapists, geriatricians and specialists caring for the elderly at various stages.

The authors focus heavily on geriatric asthenia (frailty), the issues surrounding palliative care for the elderly, cognitive and psycho-emotional impairment, dementia, depression and anxiety disorders.  An entire chapter is devoted to the foundations of geriatrics – how to assess the complex needs of geriatric patients.  It is the first time such a large volume of information has been condensed into one publication.

Yelena Frolova commented: ‘Since the last guide on geriatrics was published in 2008, a great deal has changed.  There are now, for example, new ways of supporting the elderly.  This publication is the most comprehensive guide to geriatrics.  It serves as the theoretical basis for all doctors with different specialisms who provide treatment for elderly patients.

The guide also offers valuable advice for all medical workers at junior and senior levels as well as for parents and carers with responsibility for the elderly.

Commenting on the guide, the General Director of The Yellow Cross, Ramaz Akhmeteli, said: ‘This is not about top-down instruction.  The aim of the guide is to consolidate existing knowledge about geriatrics and make best practice more widely available.  There are 19 different sections covering the theoretical basis of geriatrics, advice on the best techniques for providing care to the elderly and important information about the mistakes to avoid.’

Vladimir Shabalin, who is a Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Honorary President of the Russian Association of Gerontologists and Geriatricians, described the guide as a ‘book that will stimulate major breakthroughs in the field of geriatrics and gerontology’.

The 5th All-Russian Congress of Gerontologists and Geriatricians was held in Moscow on 19-20 April.  There were around 900 delegates from 53 different regions of the Russian Federations as well as experts from all over the world.  Over the three days there were around 50 scientific symposia, master-classes and workshops on medical topics and interdisciplinary subjects.

The guide has received positive reviews by many experts in the field.  The guide is available to purchase at medical bookshops.
