Volunteer Day established in Russia
28.11.2017
Volunteer Day is to be held each year on 5 December.
Vladimir Putin has signed a decree declaring 5 December Volunteer Day which has now been published on the Government’s legal information website. This has been introduced in line with a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly marking 5 December as International Volunteer Day as a way of encouraging social and economic growth.
“This day allows volunteers and organisations to celebrate their work and values with local communities, NGOs, UN bodies and the private sector”, the UN website says. The theme of this year’s International Volunteer Day is #VolunteersActFirstHere.
Measures to encourage the development of the volunteer movement were approved during the year, including work to harmonise the concept of volunteerism and drawing up a Bill amending current charity legislation to incorporate a range of issues related to the development of volunteerism. 2018 is likely to be the year of community action and volunteering.
